Vintage pics

In last weeks post I wrote about my love for the hipstamatic app.
An app for your iPhone camera that turns your snaps into Polaroids.
If you don't have an iPhone (guilty!) but are blessed with a pad you should download the snapseed app. This clever little program turns your average shots in to master pieces. It has a couple of pre programmed filters you can lay over your shots to make them look awesome!
In 3 clicks you go from this:

To this:

If you don't like the vintage look they also have a dramatic filter, black and white, grunge, borders, straightening tools and a crop function.
Go and play, would love to see your shots!

Location, location

For the last week I've been working on location in Cape town.
I love photo shoots on location, feeling the sun on your skin while you do your job is a big perk but also the 'thinking outside of the box' part is great. When you outside you don't have the comforts of a studio and big makeup mirrors you mostly work out of a van, I always pack a smaller kit when I'm working on location this makes you to think more creative.
I can't show you the backstage pictures just yet, have to wait till the editorials have been published, but have a look at our mobile work place.

The crew waiting to get to work

The location van is a dressing room, digital suite and makeup stall all in one!
You see the clothes on the rail? That's also the place the models get changed. In the van the computer and makeup table, Lovely Olivia sits behind the laptop.

Steaming the clothes sometimes gets done in the most beautiful places!

Hard at work, I hope to show you the results soon!

I have another 2 weeks in South Africa, will try to mobile blog while I'm here.

old meets new

The world of technology has changed a lot in the last 50 years. Can you remember your first mobile phone? Or even a car phone? The first time you used a touch screen or bought a flat screen tv?
With all this new technology widely available a lot of people long for the old skool styles and this leads to interesting hybrids. You cant log into facebook or somebody has uploaded a sun faded, old fashioned Polaroid photo produced with the hipstamatic app on their shiny new iphone.
 I must say I'm a big fan!
And have a look at this USB typewriter, you can buy a kit to make your ipad work on a old fashioned typewriter, to cool!! The modification is easy to install, involves no messy wiring, and does not change the outward appearance of the typewriter you can even still use it with paper.
Go to www.usbtypewriter.com website for a little instruction video, they also have an Etsy shop where you can buy a ready to use typewriter. Amazing!!

Spring fling

Want to start with the new spring looks but its still freezing cold outside? Start updating your look by polishing your nails in the new spring colours.
Pastel colours and flower prints are a big look this spring/summer and a lot of cosmetics companies have brought out nail polished to match. Some are in stores already others will follow soon.
This summer is going to be one of the prettiest for your hand and feet for a long time! Petal pinks, soft lilacs, leafy greens and soft jeans blue, 2012  has a very girly palette.

Essie means business for spring, with a line of six nail colours inspired by ambitious women. There's the minty Navigate Her, peachy A Crewed Interest, shimmery lilac To Buy Or Not To Buy, sparkly fuchsia Tour de Finance, they are £9.95 each and available from February.
Chanel's new seasons colours always have a waiting list and the new spring collections will not be any different the April, May and June Le Vernis shades have been eagerly anticipated for months. They are £17.50 each and available from January 27.
Jessica went all purple with their  Heavy Petal collection.£9.75 each available from March.
Dior's Garden Party collection is my favourite as the two colours are scented with rose! With the super cute names Waterlily and Forget-Me-Not I cant wait to try these out. The polishes are £18 each and available now
Max Factor has taken to this season's pastel trend with their Brooklyn collection. The colour come in Cappuccino, Mellow yellow, Chilled lilac and Pretty in pink. And that for only £3.99 per pot.
And what about the OPI collection with soft jeans blues?

Do you have a bold colour you are not brave enough to wear on your hands? Use it on your toes.
Bought a to much in your face colour? Use it just on your pinkie finger and paint the rest of your fingers in your favourite tone.
And don't forget to moisturise your hands regularly as they show signs of ageing pretty quick when the skin is to dry.
The sparkly nail polish trend from this winter carries over to spring, use the sparkles you bought for Christmas as a top coat over your spring pastels. Remember all the sparkles in the OPI muppet collection? I will use those all summer long, they were a great buy! (see the muppet post here)

Am looking forward to spring already, pretty pastels here we come!

Megga Magazines

Everybody has a few obsessions, for most woman this is shoes and bags. For me its scarfs and magazines. I love reading magazines: flipping through the pages, looking at the nice photography, getting inspired, picking up some tips, planning your new wardrobe, I adore!

Every month I pick up a wide assortment of fashion, lifestyle and craft magazines and slowly my bookshelves are running out of space so cue the Ipad.

My all time favourite magazine, Martha Stewart Living was one of the first publication to jump on the Ipad band waggon and has been bringing out a digital version for over a year now. The beautifully done digital version has added extras compared to the printed magazine, you can scroll trough panorama pictures, watch little videos and click on handy web links.

You can download the Martha Stewart Living app in the app store for free, you pay per downloaded magazine. The app store is full of magazines, have a look at the newsstand section

Not only is a digital magazine slightly cheaper and easy to purchase, now I can carry lots of editions around without having a heaving handbag.

Another advance is that foreign magazines are there for you at a touch of a button. For me, a Dutchie living in the UK, I like to read magazines I grew up with. Thanks to the tijdschrift.nl app I can buy my favourite magazine weekly without the hassle of having to order it and wait for the postman to arrive.

I love  Libelle magazine, its one of those fashion and lifestyle weeklies that your mum read and maybe even your grand mother. Now I can bring this old time favourite in the the 21century by reading it on my Ipad.

Another great magazine app is Zinio, here you can purchase almost every magazine published all over the world. You can buy your Mollie makes (great craft mag), Harpers Bazaar, Tatler, Collezioni, Elle in 6 language, Milk and way, way more. Here you can also buy back issues of your favourite magazines at no extra cost.

One little tablet with a lot of magazines option, whats not to love.

Upcycle your groceries

The grocery store is filled with jars of jams, jelly's, drinks and more. You might just see the contents of the container, but for me its a whole world of crafty possibilities.
When shopping for drinks for my new years party, I not just looked at the booze in the bottle but also if I could reuse when empty. For example I chose this particular rose cause the bottle makes for a great vase. I also have an other wine bottle's in use use a water carafe.

And as for jam jars the possibilities are endless, you can reuse them to pack your homemade jelly's, but what about using them as individual cheesecake pots?
Will post the recipe for this cheese cake pots soon!
Have a look at these other ideas I found on google and am dying to try out.
You will never look at a strawberry jam jar the same ever again :)

More tea vicar?

There is a lovely kitchen shop in Holland and Belgium called Dille&Kamille, they sell everything you think you need in your kitchen and more. From table cloths to cheese knives, plates, candles and way more. My sister picked up a cookie cutter in the shape of a teaspoon from their shop.
How cute, now you can serve your tea with an edible spoon!
The cookie cutter only costs 95 Euro cents, all the fun you can have for that! I made sugar cookies using the teaspoon cutter, its a slightly firmer dough so the thin cookies are easier to handle but you can use any dough recipe. I think they biscuits look super cute, nice idea for Sunday tea?
Dille and Kamille also has a web shop, you can order the cookie cutter here.

Goop

To be honest I've never been a big fan of Gwyneth Paltrow but then all of a sudden she started the lifestyle blog Goop, wrote cookbooks and appeared singing in Glee! I changed my mind, this woman is amazing!!
Last year I purchased 'Notes from the kitchen table' a truly refreshing cookbook. Flipping through this publication it feels more like chatting to your girlfriend then reading a cookbook by a Hollywood A-lister. (Only £10 on Amazon at the moment)
In 2008 Gwyneth started writing the Goop website, a weekly newsletter to encouraging readers to 'nourish the inner aspect'. Each week they focus on an action: Make, Go, Get, Do, Be, and See.
Definitely worth signing up for, have been getting some great tips over the last year. To top all this loveliness off Goop has launched an Ipad app, the ultimate New York city guide.
Just like the website, the Goop app gives you great tips of what to do, see and eat when in New York. And this all accompanied with beautiful drawings and little Gwyneth videos, whats not to love.
A Los angeles and London guide will be added soon.

Hesters Hall of Fame

Looking at my bathroom shelve I thought it must be time for another Hesters Hall of Fame, it looks like I have a whole Aveda shop up there!!

Making it into the Hall of Fame: Aveda

Since being introduced to Aveda by my hairdresser 12 years ago I've been in love with their plant based products.
From shampoos to moisturisers, candles to lip gloss Aveda has it all.
On a trip to India in the 70's Aveda founder Horst Rechelbacher was introduced to the healing properties of Ayurveda, the traditional Hindu longevity medicine. Suddenly his vision for his company was born and he formulated the first product, a clove shampoo, in his kitchen sink. Today Aveda is part of the Estée Lauder group (although the company is run a separate entity)
From kitchen sink to multinational, a true success story!
Aveda believes that authentic beauty is one that works in harmony with the greater web of life. It does not qualify as beauty if it hurts any of the diverse life forms that nature created.
Aveda's commitment to social and environmental improvement is a cornerstone of their corporate culture. This has been true since the company's founding in 1978 and continues through the present.
Aveda grants to support the important work of organisations focused on environmental protection, is big on responsible packaging, manufacture their products using wind energy and are the first to introduce an aerosol hairspray that has a net-zero impact on the Earth's climate.

I adore the Tourmaline charged moisturiser. This cream contains powdered tourmaline, a naturally energising mineral that is mixed with marine and plant extracts and 11 powerful anti-oxidants. The cream is hydrating and protects from harm full environmental influences. It leaves my skin looking fresh and radiant, the only downfall it doesn't contain a SPF so cant use it as a day creme. There are way more products in the Tourmaline line, like a cleanser, eye creme, mask and radiance fluid
Other products you can find on my bathroom shelve, the Caribbean therapy body moisturiser. A thick creme with mango and cocoa butter. Close your eyes and pretend to be on a tropical island!

Aveda's Be curly line is the best I've tried so far. The products will transform your frizzy twist into luscious curls!! They have a shampoo, conditioner, leave in curl enhancing creme (the best of the line!) a styling prep and a styling product. Definitely worth a try if you have curly hair.
I have been using the Phomollient styling foam for years now and couldn't live without.
This light weight styling product has organic honey, burdock and marshmallow root in it and works great on fine hair.
The Botanical facial mist is another staple, after cleansing your face this cooling, refreshing mist helps hydrate and balance your skin.

The first Aveda product I started using was the Volumizing mist and the Sap moss shampoo.Unfortunately the Sap moss line isn't in production anymore, boowoo, but the volumzing tonic is still going strong. This spray will help build body and add shine to your do. Other hair musts I have in my makeup bag are the Light elements texturizing creme. This styling product gives you weightless texture for all hair types. Hair feels soft and natural not crunchy, sticky or dry. The Light elements smoothing fluid is also a favourite of mine, it adds shine and movement making your hair look very healthy.

More must haves:
From the male line the Pure-formance grooming creme. So good I use it on my hair as well!
Its a styling creme that gives pliable hold and control while maintaining a natural look.
The Witch hazel hair spray, provides light-hold, reduces static and eliminates fly aways on fine and medium hair. This is the first hairspray that smells yummy!!
The Rosemary and mint body wash, smells good enough to eat. With organic rosemary and peppermint to wake you up in the morning.
Also try the Chakra balancing body mists, an authentic fusion of pure essential oils blended to balance the root chakra according to Ayurveda, the ancient healing art of India. I use the number 1 with essences of olibanum, organic patchouli and vetiver. Chakra 1 is the centre where we ground ourselves and take care of our basic needs. I also use number 6 whitch has organic petitgrain, orange and geranium. Chakra 6 is the centre of intuition, imagination and balance

On my wish list for 2012 are the Caribbean therapy body crub, scrubbing with cane sugar, coconut, avocado and passionfruit oils sounds like heaven to me.
Also the new Invati lines for thicker, fuller hair sounds amazing!
And I can only dream about treatments in the Aveda spa. The Aveda institute in Londons Holborn is amazing, but Aveda spa's can be found all over the world.
My friend M runs an amazing Aveda city spa in Enschede, the Netherlands. If you are in the area definitely drop in, they start all treatments with a feet cleanse and massage, heaven! for link click here
To find a spa or store location world wide click here
Looking for a new look this January? Go to the Aveda institute in Hoborn, London. They have some of the best hairstylists in town.

Kitchen cupboard skincare

Is your skin in need of a little TLC after overindulging on chocolates over the holiday period?
But your bank balance is feeling the January blues?
Look no further then your own kitchen cupboards, a little bit of sugar and lemon juice go a long way!
Start by cleaning your skin with your favourite cleaner, a regular reader will know my absolute must is the Shu Uemura cleansing oil and guess what? You get a  freebee 50ml cleanser if you purchase from their website today and tomorrow! http://www.shuuemura.co.uk/
When your face is nice and clean leave your skin a little damp, dip your finger tips in the sugar bowl and gently massage the grains over your face. Wash off with water.
Squeeze some lemon juice on a dampened cotton pad and wipe this over your face, lemon juice makes a great toner.

Your skin still not looking radiant enough? Mix some yogurt with a spoon full of honey, apply and leave this mask on for 5 minutes. Wash off with cold water.

Are your eyes still puffy from all your New Years partying? A used tea bag does wonders, leave them on for a few minutes, and a good excuse to make another cuppa :)

Finding it difficult getting up early for work again? Leave 2 tablespoons in the freezer for 2 minutes and hold them on your eyes for a few seconds, instant depuffing wake up call!
